Papers, 1783-1884.

Papers, primarily letters received, by Emory Washburn, lawyer and politician of Leicester and Worcester, Mass., serving as governor from 1854-55 and a member of the Mass. General Court for several terms. The bulk of the collection is correspondence relating to his legal career and individual cases, the state and national Whig Party of which he was a member, letters received as governor providing advice and recommendations for political appointments, invitations and requests for him to speak. Also included are papers related to the settlement of the family estate in Calais, Vt. (1783-1847); his student papers from Williams College (1815-17); the minutes of a Williams alumni meeting (1845); and letters exchanged between Washburn and his family while he and his wife were travelling in Europe (1870). Correspondents include Peleg W. Chandler, Rufus Choate, Abbott Lawrence, Levi Lincoln, George Morey, and several family members including Minnie Washburn (his daughter) and Nehemiah Giles.
